Phoenix, AZ (November 13, 2008) – The Phoenix Regional Sports Commission, in partnership with Scottsdale Parks and Recreation, and the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitor Bureau announced today the successful bid to host the 2009 and 2010 US Lacrosse Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) National Championships.
US Lacrosse chose Phoenix to host its WDIA National Championships May 6-9, 2009 and May 5-8, 2010 at the Scottsdale Sports Complex.
Sports Commission President Jon Schmieder commended the team effort needed to secure the Championships, “The staffs at both the Scottsdale Sports Complex and the Greater Phoenix CVB went the extra mile in landing these two prestigious events. This is a great example of how entities across the Valley often work together to achieve a common goal.”
“We are very pleased and excited that Scottsdale has the opportunity to host the 2009 and 2010 Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates National Lacrosse Championships,” said Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross. “It’s an honor to host this elite event at the Scottsdale Sports Complex.”
Last summer the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission set a goal of securing events that would drive at least $100 million into the Valley. The target date for achieving the goal is May 2010. The US Lacrosse WDIA National Championships are the first step towards achieving the Sports Commission’s lofty goal.
“We are thrilled to have our 2009 and 2010 US Lacrosse WDIA National Championships in Scottsdale,” said US Lacrosse Director of Special Events, Sarah Oglesby. “These student athletes work so hard and they deserve the best. We know the team in Greater Phoenix will help us deliver a top-notch experience for everyone involved and show that the Valley is a great place to play lacrosse.”
Each of the two US Lacrosse Championships will bring more than 1,400 people to the area who will utilize more than 1,000 total hotel room nights. Economic impact estimates indicate the 2009 Championship will result in direct visitor spending of more than $1,200,000. Over the life of the agreement the direct economic impact on the region is expected to be more than $2.4 million.
