PHOENIX, Ariz. (July 22, 2009) – The Phoenix Regional Sports Commission, in partnership with APS, announced today the launch of the inaugural Youth Sports Summit. The day-long event will involve leaders of youth sports programs to address areas of need within Maricopa County.
“The Sports Commission mission has always included an objective to help youth through sports,” said Phoenix Regional Sports Commission President Jon Schmieder. “The challenge our board wants us to address is not just how we help kids in the Valley, but how we do so in a meaningful and sustainable way. So we are reaching out to the leaders that are in the trenches to ask them what challenges they have, and to ask them how we can help.”
The goal of the free event is to generate a long range game plan for the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission’s youth sports committee. The results of the Summit will be crafted into a strategic plan to be executed in 2010 and beyond. The goal of the PRSC youth committee is to activate a sustainable and strategic initiative that will help a large number of Maricopa County kids, using sports as the vehicle to impact them.
Arizona Youth Soccer Association President Jason Vanacour commented on the inaugural Summit, “We are looking forward to a collaborative effort with other youth sports organizations to help us provide the best opportunities for the Valley’s youth that we can.”
“We are proud to be part of a project that will help so many kids over the long haul. This inaugural Youth Sports Summit could be a watershed event for our community,” said APS Community Development Manager Cindy Slick.
The inaugural Youth Sports Summit will be held August 6th at the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains. In addition to breakout sessions and best practice discussions, area professional teams will conduct an educational session on sports foundations and funding.
